The Legend of the Black Bean Soup

Black beans, yellow rice, sherry, cilantro, freshly squeezed lime juice, tomatoes, coriander, habanero pepper – how can you lose with this soup??

Mention the Legend of the Black Bean Soup anywhere in the southwest and people will spontaneously stop what they are doing and will cheer. The story is famous – you’ve probably heard it a million times by now. You know, how Black Bean Soup and his mighty Band of Yellow Rice stormed the village of Las Souperavas and saved them from the tyrannical rule of the evil mayor Senor Transfatito and his sidekick Highfructorsecornsyriapo? I love that story! My favorite part is the end where they all celebrate – Black Bean, the Band of Yellow Rice, sherry, cilantro, freshly squeezed lime juice, tomatoes, coriander, and of course, young habanero pepper (who was really key to the whole operation – the wind beneath Black Bean’s wings, if you will). What a diverse crew! What a filling, hearty, delicious bunch! The spices! The fresh ingredients! Senor Transfatito simply didn’t stand a chance.

Ingredients (in no particular order): black beans, sherry, cilantro, tomato, coriander, garlic, onion, celery, habanero pepper, freshly squeezed lime juice, scallion, jasmine rice, turmeric, olive oil, homemade vegetable stock goodness, salt, pepper

Proof that not all black bean soups are created equal! This is ridiculously good. RIDICULOUSLY GOOD.

  • Arnold says:

So far, this soup is my favorite bean-based soup in the Soupergirl’s “pantry.” I greatly enjoyed its texture and its full-bodied, hearty, slightly spicy, and slightly smokey flavor.

I really liked this soup, and I loved the twist of sherry. It really added a nice richness. Next time I order it though, I think I will make sure to have some chopped red onion, fresh pico de gallo, and maybe some sour cream to add on top. PS My two year old daughter loved it!

Great flavors – complex and satisfying. I, too, felt like there may have been a bit too much sherry, but over all super duper yummy.
