Souperpapa’s Papa Al Pomodoro Soup

Souperpapa knows good soup. And good communication skills.

souperpapaLast month, I went to visit Souperpapa in his small village, Soupany, located in the heart of Tuscany. I packed my backpack, walking stick, some water, a few tomatoes, and a Luna Bar, and climbed up the hill to his little cottage. “Souperpapa,” I said. “I need a fabulous summer soup. One that captures the essence of the wonderful summer flavors at the farmer’s markets in Washington, DC. A soup that can be served hot or room temperature! Help me!” Souperpapa grunted in reply. He doesn’t speak any English so that’s really the extent of our verbal communication. Anyway, he took my tomatoes, and then went into the garden, grabbed some basil, a few pieces of garlic, and an onion. He pulled a piece of rustic bread from his shelf, along with his olive oil. He grunted again. I took his grunt to mean, “This is all you need. Your people will love this soup. The aromas are amazing. It is simple, yet delicious. I seduced your Soupermama (not to be confused with Soupermom) with this soup back in 1952. That was quite a summer, but that’s a story for another time. Anyway, this soup is my absolute favorite. Also, you should make it when you do chef’s demos at farmer’s markets around DC. People will love it and will order lots of it. Trust me on this one.” Wow, after that what else could I do? And no, I don’t think I’m reading too much into his grunts.

There is only one word for this soup — WOWWEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! Another soup worthy of 10 spoons. Thanks for creating such a wonderful soup. So happy that I ordered a quart this time. :)

  • Johanna says:

Good, nice, satisfying (esp w/pine nuts and parmesan as suggested), but not my favorite. Little too oily on the finish, but still a good use of great, fresh ingredients.

  • Arnold says:

A very delicious way to get lots of lycopene when tomatoes are in season. I ate it unheated, and it was so good that I didn’t even mind the few seeds it left between my teeth. :-)

  • Meg says:

This soup was INCREDIBLE!!! Really amazing. One of my all-time favorites.

  • Tiffany says:

So far this is my favorite soup! So glad I tried it:)

  • Jill says:

Summer in a bowl — so very wonderful. I tried first tried this at a farmer’s market where Soupergirl was sampling it, and it’s my favorite. I even made a batch of it myself using the recipe handed out at the farmer’s market — quite tasty, but not like the delightful masterpiece from Soupergirl’s magical hands. Please offer this many more times during what’s left of the summer, Soupergirl! My only suggestion would be slightly less oil — but who argues with near perfection?

My favorite soup so far! Magically delicious and the most flavorful I’ve had to date. Keep it coming!

  • Maria says:

I did not comment on this soup the first time.
I give it 5 spoons. Amazing flavor!

  • Susanna says:

This was great soup — my favorite in terms of flavor of any soupergirl creation. I was a little disappointed, though, that there were so many tomato skins in the soup. I would definitely prefer it if the tomatoes were blanched so they could be peeled.

  • Roberta says:

The best soup I’ve ever tasted in my entire life! I would eat this every second day if I could.

  • Heather says:

Perfection! One if your best soups ever!

FABULOUS!!! I hope you offer this soup again sometime soon. It is clearly one of the best soups I have ever eaten. I thought the West African Safari Stew was my favorite….I may be rethinking this now!

I bought this soup at the Dupont Farmer’s Market last weekend and regret that I didn’t take the advice of the nice guy that sold it to me – buy two quarts!! Instead I bought only a pint which I finished so quickly and was sad I didn’t have more. Hope this one comes back soon :).

  • Beth says:

I bought a quart of this one, but wish I had bought more. Definitely my favorite soup so far. The tomato flavor was very present and the herbs made it more flavorful. The bread helped to make it full, but without being heavy. I loved every bite! Please bring it back again soon.

This soup was worthy of a souperhug and kiss to souperpapa. Fantastic. I was sad when it was gone. Good to the last spoonful.

  • Trish says:

I have been eagerly anticipating the tomato soup, and here it is at last. YUM. Love the basil flavor! Just delicious. And the new pita chips? Oh WOW. They will not last the hour.

OH EM GEE. Pomodoro may be the best soup I’ve ever put in my mouth, not JUST the best Soupergirl soup. WOW. Sometimes, I am about to eat soup and I think, “Ok, great, soup for lunch. Solid, but not amazing.” But honestly, there are certain Soupergirl soups that I eat and I just go BEZERK! It is so good that I can’t NOT talk about it!

  • Mary Jane says:

FAB!!!!!!! My first order and my mouth and tummy could not be happier! Soupergirl must do this one again! Can’t wait for next week!

  • Daiva says:
