I recently got a hold of the original script to the cult movie, A Princess Bride. Remember the classic scene when Inigo Montoya corners the evil Count Rugen? He says, “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” Well, it turns out the original script was much more involved (and better, if you ask me). The original line was, “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father just as he was giving me his famous tortilla soup recipe. You have no idea how frustrating that was. My father told me it has black beans, zucchini, corn, spices, and corn tortillas. You killed him before he told me how long to cook the soup! Can you tell me? Do you have any ideas?” Then, Inigo Montoya and Count Rugen cook a few batches of soup and come up with the perfect simmering time – long enough to let the spices and herbs blend perfectly with the beans and tortillas, but short enough to prevent the beans from getting mushy. Perfect. Then Inigo Montoya and Count Rugen open up a little soup cart business, and they do very well together. Princess Buttercup gets very involved in the local food movement and becomes their spokesperson. I guess the story was a little ahead of its time – but it still made for a very interesting read!
Ingredients (in no particular order): black beans, zucchini, corn, tomatoes, corn tortillas, tomato paste, cumin, chili powder, cilantro, jalapeno chili, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, canola oil, homemade vegetable stock goodness
Soup type: Chunky

Loved the flavor of this soup and esp the flavor imparted by the tortillas…now, about those tortillas….they seemed to get a little slimy over time (couple days in fridge or reheating after being frozen), but still, the soup was quite good and the texture didn’t bother me. But, for the texture-sensitive, the tortillas definitely give it an unusual mouth feel. Again, a great, innovative soup, just a different texture. Certainly hope this one stays in the rotation.
Sara,
I liked this soup a lot. It was hearty and filled with lots of tortillas, which I liked –
I added a little tobasco to it and ate a pint of it cold I was so hungry…
I agree with Johanna–the pita/tortilla was a bit slimy and mushy when I received mine. But still delicious flavors and who can really resist the Princess Bride reference anyway!
No sliminess to be found this time around. It is wonderful. Again again!!
